12. Befuddled

While they drank and ate, Shellany studied the data for PEACH in Galaxy 342MW-11 then reached into a backpack and pulled out a codeboard.

‘Oh, so you’re a programmer!’ said Bryll. ‘That explains how you know so much about the game.’

Shellany simply nodded and smiled as she connected the codeboard to the mainframe via the unused port. When everyone wondered how she got past the game’s security, she said, ‘I used to work on a system just like this.’

‘That’s useful. And timely. Are you going to reprogram the planet?’

‘I wish. It doesn’t work like that. There are rules. Everything has to be a part of the game.’ Rows of data moved and changed as she tapped away. ‘This is just an interim fix,’ she explained as she clicked. ‘If I had my full setup and more time I’d be able to do more than just add a workaround. I’ve added a loophole to pause the Time Stabiliser long enough to accelerate its prime civilisation.’ She clicked more keys then exited the data field.

The Universe biosphere filled the display again, and all heads turned to marvel at the cosmic wonders around them. In the foreground PEACH dominated the view. Vast deep oceans dominated few landmasses that were green and tan with the occasional white patch.

‘Pretty,’ Gelda remarked and everyone murmured in agreement.

Shellany got Gelda to click the Events icon on the main overlay. Now, first on the list, was a new roughly drawn icon for a sidequest called Pair with Flair. When Gelda clicked it, an unrefined game sample played. Stick figures wandered around a primitive village, some with coloured blocks above their heads.

‘Sorry about the draft quality, but you get the idea.’

‘A matching game?’ Hazzy wondered.

Shellany nodded. ‘It's fast-paced, limited time. The aim is to match compatible couples to generate intelligent offspring.’

‘Seems simple enough,’ said Odgio. ‘You just match the coloured blocks.’

Hazzy squinted her eyes. ‘But they’re all kind of a reddish-brown.’

‘Look closer. They’ve all got different hues,’ Gelda pointed out but agreed that it required a discerning eye. Some were quite similar.

‘Just keep focused and you’ll do great,’ Bryll encouraged.

‘I’ve made the sidequest playable in semi-immersive mode so you can zoom in on each society,’ said Shellany.

Shellany ran through sidequest strategies. Before starting to play, Gelda adjusted the steering wheel then traversed the globe to get a good look at the place from the same height as its flying creatures. From large to tiny, every society on PEACH was primitive. Scattered villages with crude huts made of stone, straw, and clay were surrounded by land cleared to grow crops and raise livestock. In more populated areas, wheeled carts rolled on dusty roads. PEACH had a long way to go to earn its place as galactic prime.

It definitely seems like something has stopped it from reaching its potential, thought Gelda. She zoomed in on the first society. It was a small village near a forest.

‘They look like us!’ Bryll exclaimed.

Fansy opened an eye and laughed. ‘If we were filthy and lived like Gorgons.
